This IDC study examines the case for the deployment of broadband wireless access networks based on the WiMAX standard defined by the IEEE 802.16 Task Group and presents a five-year forecast for WiMAX infrastructure spending by network operators and service providers worldwide. The study includes a high-level overview of the technology and situates WiMAX within the context of other technologies that constitute the wireless universe. This study is part of IDC's continuing research on mobile and wireless network infrastructure.
"As a standards-based technology, WiMAX represents a marked improvement over earlier, and proprietary, wireless broadband access technologies. However, the success of WiMAX, unlike that of WiFi, is predicated on the emergence of an operator business case. We do not believe it poses any serious threat to the more established cellular technologies during the forecast period," says Shiv K. Bakhshi, Ph.D., IDC's research director for the Mobile and WiFi Infrastructure practice.
